Discover Festivals and Celebrations at Austin Waldorf School

Festivals at Austin Waldorf School are beloved traditions that mark the rhythm of the year, offering moments of reflection, connection, and celebration. Rooted in the changing seasons, these events help connect us more deeply to nature, to each other, and to the shared human experience.
While Anthroposophy draws on a non-denominational Christian impulse, our festival life honors the universal meanings and symbols found across cultures and traditions. Teachers thoughtfully incorporate seasonal festivals into the curriculum, often inviting families to share customs and celebrations that are meaningful to them.

Michaelmas: A Festival of Courage

Michaelmas is a unique Waldorf festival that celebrates inner strength and the courage to face life’s challenges. Rooted in the story of the archangel Michael, who battles darkness not by destroying it but by holding it in balance, the festival invites reflection on our own struggles with fear, doubt, and negativity.

As the light of summer fades and autumn begins, Michaelmas reminds us to awaken our inner resolve. In Waldorf schools, students honor this seasonal shift through music, drama, and pageantry—creating lasting memories that speak to courage, transformation, and hope.

Día de los Muertos and Diwali Celebrations

At Austin Waldorf School, our Spanish Program honors Día de los Muertos with a vibrant community altar, where students, families, and staff contribute photos, flowers, candles, and keepsakes to remember loved ones.

We also celebrate Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, with storytelling, crafts, and puppetry—recognizing the universal triumph of light over darkness.

Martinmas, Lantern Walk

As autumn brings shorter days, our early grades celebrate light through lantern walks, symbolizing each child’s inner light. Second graders hear the story of Saint Martin, whose act of compassion reminds us to carry warmth and kindness into the darker season.

Advent and the Spiral of Light

Midwinter celebrations of light, rooted in ancient traditions, remind us of the renewal and hope that emerge from darkness. At Austin Waldorf School, Advent is a time for reflection and preparation, with each week focusing on a different kingdom of nature: mineral, plant, animal, and human. The lighting of four candles symbolizes the growing light and the birth of new hope.

A key tradition is the Spiral of Light, where children walk a spiral path, lighting candles from a central flame. As they add their light, the space glows, symbolizing our collective journey from darkness to light.

Santa Lucia, Bearer of Light

In early December, second graders learn about saints from around the world. They celebrate with a procession led by Santa Lucia, a child dressed in white and wearing a crown of four glowing candles. Saint Lucia, a Christian martyr from Sicily, is known for her devotion to helping others and is often depicted with light as a symbol of hope and charity. As they move from class to class, the children share special cookies with their schoolmates.

St. Nicholas Day, Spirit of GIving

Bishop Nicholas of Myra, now modern-day Turkey, is the patron saint of children, known for his generosity and compassion. He gave all his wealth to help the poor, sick, and suffering, and countless legends celebrate his kindness. On the evening of December 5, children in many traditions place their shoes outside, hoping for treats as St. Nicholas observes how they “walk” through life. In our classrooms, he often brings golden nuts and oranges, and may read from his golden book, where our deeds are written.

Maypole

As spring transitions into summer, the Austin Waldorf community comes together to celebrate with the dances and music the children have been preparing. As parents, grandparents, and teachers clap along to the rhythms of the maypole music, the children dance, weaving colorful ribbons into a beautiful pattern, much like the way our community is woven together.
