Mission Statement

Nurture, inspire, engage: enlightening the journey toward a more humane, just, and sustainable future.

Helen Steele, Austin Waldorf School Founder

In 1973, Helen Steele, a former teacher at Highland Hall Waldorf School in California, moved to Texas with a bold vision—to establish the first Waldorf school in the state. Surrounded by a group of like-minded pioneers, Helen spent five years offering lectures and workshops to build awareness and support for Waldorf education in Texas.

Through The Years

Establishing Austin Waldorf School

The Austin Waldorf School began in 1980 with just eleven first graders at the historic Johnson House on Town Lake. Rapid growth followed, and by year six, the school had expanded to eight grades and two kindergartens—prompting the search for a permanent campus.

Expanding Our Campus

In 1986, the Austin Waldorf School found its permanent home on eleven scenic acres at the edge of Austin. Over one summer, a former homestead was transformed into a school through the hard work and spirit of our community. By fall, classrooms replaced horse barns, and the sound of our school bell marked a new beginning.

Growing Our Kindergarten

In the early 1990s, continued growth made it clear — a new kindergarten was needed. Once again, with hammers in hand, the community came together to build what is now the Stargarden. The new space opened with joyful celebration, food, and dancing.

Founding Juniper Tree

Founded in December 1992 by a devoted group of parents, the Juniper Tree quickly grew into a beloved part of the Austin Waldorf School. By 1994, a dedicated store—built by parents—was created to support its growth. Today, it continues to offer curated books, toys, and handmade goods for our community.

Opening Our High School

The dream expanded again in 1990, when a group of parents, educators, and faculty began planning a high school. After years of preparation and guidance from experienced Waldorf teachers, the Austin Waldorf School celebrated its first graduating high school class in 2001.
